I was on a high all morning long. We managed to defeat her and all came out of it pretty well. We might survive if we managed to improve at the same rate we’d done during practice. Quinn never said when her master would be coming, but I didn’t know if that meant she was keeping it from us or if she didn’t know for sure.

I needed to get with Emily to figure out this transformation thing. I wanted to have control over it. Relying on getting upset to change meant I ran the risk of losing my mind to the beast. Emily felt pretty sure she’d be able to transform into a wolf as well. She hoped that it would be something that could help me with my own.

At lunch, I purposely sought Paul out. He smiled when he saw me.

“You’re in a good mood,” he said.

“Yeah. It’s nice. Maybe I should have good days more often.” I took his hand. He seemed surprised, but didn’t say anything. He held onto my hand tightly for a moment before softening his grip and rubbing his thumb across my thumb.

“We still on for Max’s walk after school?”

“Yup. I wouldn’t miss it.”

“Are you sure you aren’t just using me to get closer to my dog?” Paul teased.

“Oh, man. You caught me. Now what will we do? It’s going to be so awkward to have you there since I’ve been trying to steal your dog from you,” I said, bumping him in the arm with my shoulder.

“He wouldn’t mind. He adores you.”

“I love him. He’s the coolest dog ever.” I smiled at the memories of the weekend when we’d taken him for a walk, stopped at the park, and threw a Frisbee for him. He caught it every time.

“He probably wouldn’t even notice it if I didn’t come.”

“Why, Paul, I’d almost say you’re jealous.”

“Not completely, but I do get close every once in a while. Maybe I should take you out without bringing Max.”

I grinned. “That would defeat the purpose of going to the park to walk him.”

“No. I mean on a real date.”

I looked up into his eyes and got slightly nervous at his expression.

“Will you go to the homecoming dance with me?” Paul asked.

“I don’t know if I can.” I really did want to go out with him, and homecoming would have been the perfect place, but it was the night of the full moon. I still didn’t know what would happen to me on a full moon if I were exposed to it.

Paul’s face fell. My heart clenched when I saw it.

“It’s okay. I understand,” he said as he tried to take his hand out of mine. I didn’t let him.

“No, you don’t understand,” I nearly snapped. I took a deep breath and tried to speak softly. “I would love to go with you, it’s just that I might have a problem with that particular night.”

“Like what?”

“Will you give me a chance to work it out and let you know
